Out of Site: Survey Science and the Hidden West — Exhibition Catalogue

The Autry Museum | Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collide
2024

Featured in Issues in Science and Technology, Winter 2025

Published alongside the Autry exhibition, the catalogue traces 170 years of art and imaging technology in the American West, from wet-plate survey photography through aerial imaging to drones and satellites. Edited by Amy Scott, it brings together essays by Scott, Jason Weems, William L. Fox, and Britt Salvesen, with contributions from Hillary Mushkin, Mark Klett, Kim Stringfellow, and Will Wilson.

Design: The design drew on the exhibition’s language of concealing and revealing and on the form of the field manual. A soft cover and exposed binding tape give the book the feel of a working guide, and silver ink ties it to the exhibition and to the minerality that runs through its subject.
