Rugged Beauty: Antique Carpets from Western Asia
The Denver Art Museum
December 2022 – May 2023
An exhibition exploring the artistic and cultural traditions of hand-knotted carpet weaving across present-day Turkey, Iran, and the Caucasus from the 1500s to the 1900s. Across 4,451 square feet of gallery space, more than 40 objects revealed the deep history of trade, diplomacy, and cross-cultural exchange embedded in the rich colors, intricate patterns, and complex symbolism of each work.
The graphic design program drew directly from the material culture of the region. Wall colors were informed by manuscript traditions of the period, grounding visitors in the visual world that produced these textiles. The Lithos typeface — chosen for its almost calligraphic qualities and simultaneously modern sensibility — extended that connection through every interpretive element, creating a cohesive design language that honored the handmade origins of the work while remaining accessible to a contemporary audience.
